As a community, Taekwondo practitioners have a code of rules which govern interaction among its members. These rules help maintain the central tenets of Taekwondo: loyalty, respect, courtesy, perseverance, and justice.

Following is a list of these rules and etiquette.

  1. When you enter a Taekwondo school, you must bow to the flags, to the instructors, and all black belts. When a black belt enters the school, you must get up from your seat and greet him or her and bow.
  2. When you bow, you must be in a position of attention with your head bent at 45 degrees and your back at 15 degrees. you must bring the heels of your feet together vigorously.
  3. Students must be ready (on time) when class begins. If you are late, do 20 pushups before you join class. Students must be appropriately dressed for class, which includes designated, clean uniform (or designated club T-shirt and pants) and belt, bare feet or Taekwondo shoes. If you wear Taekwondo shoes for class, they can have only a white sole, and the shoes cannot be worn outside. No T-shirts or uniforms from other schools are allowed. Jewelry is also not allowed. Long hair needs to be tied back. Finger and toe nails cannot be long. If you are not properly dressed (for example, not having your belt), do 20 push ups before joining the class.
  4. For special occasions, like belt testing, scholarship interviews, demonstrations, etc. be sure to wear your full uniform (not just the T-shirt), and bring your sparring gear.
  5. Respect must be shown to instructors, parents, and other students at all times. If this rule is not followed, extra exercise will be assigned. This includes not talking when someone else is talking, not talking when exercises are taking place, addressing instructors as “Sabomnim” and responding to questions with “Yes Sir!” or “Yes Ma’am!”
  6. No horseplay or inappropriate language is allowed before, during, or after class.
  7. No food, candy, or gum is allowed in the Dojang (Taekwondo school).
  8. Students are not allowed to use the techniques they learn in class anywhere else (like at home or on the playground) besides in the Taekwondo school. We do not teach students how to fight- we teach students how to avoid fights, as well as learn a sport and valuable life skills.
  9. Monthly fees are paid to D&S Billing Co. or to the Ballards. If your payment is 10 days late, there is a $10 late fee. It is the responsibility of the student to pay club fees, not the responsibility of the instructor to remind you. If you can not remember when your payments are due, just ask! Testing fees must also be paid before the day of the test.
  10. If the student will be missing a certain block of classes (two weeks, a month, etc.), inform the instructor prior to the absence.
  11. If you bring a bag with you, be sure you put it on a shelf in the back room. Do not lay your bags, shoes, or coats on the floor.
  12. As part of your belt requirements, green belts and higher are required to assist at one beginner class (5 or 5:45pm) per week.
  13. Students may be suspended from class or from further training at Champion Martial Arts, temporarily or permanently, if the student’s conduct or actions are considered undesirable in any manner. The instructors and the owners have the right to refuse service to anyone.
  14. Photos and videos may be taken of students and used for display on the internet, for publications, etc. at any time.
